Mount Cofano. The nature reserve of Mount Cofano,
which was recently instituted, looks like a dark limestone mass
of impressive size, which together with the gulf that rings it,
provides a beautiful display of steep, reddish walls that are reflected
in the crystal clear water of the San Vito sea.
Flanking the mountain on the right, right before Custonaci, you
can see some caves along the rocky side that today are used for
the extraction of the famous Perlato marble of Sicily (exported
throughout the world), whose luminescence contrasts with the rough
rocks.
Near the caves, we find the Grotta Mangiapane (Scurati area).
It is named after the family that lived there from the 19th century
until the end of the last World War.
In this wide and deep space, with an opening that is about 80 meters
high and 70 meters deep, over the course of time, many small square
houses were built, some stables, a chapel and a bread oven. Outside,
near the cave, other small rural constructions sprang up.
Abandoned by the shepherds who used it to process ricotta cheese,
another use has been found for it since 1983. Every year, it is
here that the charming Nativity Play is set up.
