Tonnara del Secco. About three kilometres from the
residential centre of San Vito, the old Tonnara del Secco stands.
Its nets were dropped a few meters from the shore in the seas of
Capo San Vito and in the inlet of San Giuliano. This was how large
fish were caught, which in the springtime, during the reproduction
period, travelled through waters of the gulf of Castellammare.
The nets have not been thrown into the sea since 1969, but the
place preserves its ancient charm and the fishermen of the place
love to tell of the adventures of the mattanza ritual.
Next to the buildings of the tuna fishery, we can admire what is
the left of the very ancient fish processing equipment (especially
for tuna), such as the tubs of coccio-pesto mortar, which date back
to the 4th century B.C.
